When are Lasers used in Dentistry?

Modern dentistry has many tools that were not available even just a few years ago. One of these useful tools is the laser. While it may seem like lasers belong in spy movies or art from the 1980’s, they are actually very useful in many different ways, in cosmetic, preventive, and other areas of dentistry.

Lasers are focused sources of light that create directed heat. Our dentist uses lasers to:

·         Eliminate canker and cold sores
·         Access wisdom teeth that have not erupted yet, or are unable to erupt
·         Remove muscles that inhibit mobility in the mouth
·         Help eliminate or manage gum tissue
·         Remove overgrown tissues (caused by medications or other factors)
·         Help perform biopsies
·         Remove gum tissues for tooth lengthening procedure
·         Help remove decayed pulp in root canal procedures

Lasers are also used in teeth whitening treatments. They can remove external stains, and offer precision, important for avoiding sensitive soft tissues. Patients should be aware that laser dentistry is proven safe, and in fact makes many treatments and procedures even safer.
